Meritorious school again in headlines, seeing the anger of the students the administration took a strict decision
An uproar once again broke out in the Meritorious School of Ghabdan village, which was in the news for serving spoiled food to children in the school mess. On Wednesday morning, a large number of female students and their parents gathered outside the school and staged a protest in front of the main gate of the school and raised loud slogans demanding the removal of the girls’ hostel warden and other demands.
It may be noted that on December 2, more than 70 children complained of food poisoning after eating spoiled food in the school canteen, and due to their condition worsening, the children were admitted to the hospital. On the orders of State Education Minister Harjot Bains, when the case of playing with the health of children in the school came to light, the police took action against the contractor and manager of the canteen and filed a complaint under Section 307. Besides, after forming an investigation team, the administration decided to close the school for 5 days.
When the school reopened on Wednesday, the female students who reached the school with their parents got angry and demanded the suspension of the hostel warden. Class 12 students Manmeet Kaur and Pawanpreet Kaur, along with Class 11 student Harmanpreet Kaur, who participated in the protest, accused the warden of not treating the children properly. He said that the warden threatens to expel him from the school and does not give him medicines even when he is ill. The angry parents also demanded the dismissal of the hostel warden and fulfillment of their other demands. On the other hand, on receiving information about the protest, Deputy DEO of the Education Department Preetinder Ghai along with police officers reached the spot and listened to the female students and parents. After this, the Deputy DEO pacified the parents and said that their demands were legitimate and would be fulfilled.
Administration bowed to the protest, removed the warden
Ghai assured the parents from the stage that the warden of the female students had been removed and a temporary warden had been posted in her place. Apart from this, a committee consisting of 8 children and 8 teachers will check the canteen food daily, also a team of 5 teachers will clean the school mess and regularly check the people preparing food and apart from this, the washrooms of the school will be cleaned 2 times a day. Bars will be cleaned, children will be allowed to talk on the phone with their parents once a week. Deputy D.E.O. After the assurance given by the female students and their parents calmed down, they ended their protest.
